well this has been a bit of an experiment for me, I have always kept centrals but kept seeing these in the shop looking cool with their bright colours and figured i would give a pair ago and not really knowing much about them. so i started with a pair

i figured i see them all the time how hard can they be, well i put these in my fry/ bristlenose breeding tank, and over a couple of weeks i read more and more and after a couple of weeks i lost the female. she bloated and died, not sure if she eat a bristlenose fry or what but was a little upset because a few days before i had seen at least one fry in there. well the male was healthy so i went back to the drawing board.

about 2 weeks ago I got offered another 30g and figured i would make a proper go at these ( if i'm honest the channa have helped me get into more planted tanks) i find it a bit frustrating and a challenge when i can't get things to work and breeding these has become a bit of a goal.

the tank was set up after reading loads of conflicting information like so. with slate and gravel and low sub substraight hiding caves

then plants and pot hides

then i wasnt content with it and was told i needed more (on another forum) I also slowed the flow down but adding a larger pipe and some foam to stem the flow to almost a trickle. added more plants and some wood.

so everyone was happy the two males were not bothering each other and the females found homes. then i posted pictures on another forum and got told there wasn't enough "structure" so i got to work...

more hides and sand because they prefer that..

also note i removed some plants that were sold as aquarium plants (new to them) but turned out to be bambo.

so at this point i'm not sure what else i needed to do and i was told leaf litter and more hides. so I get one it

and here is where i am now

more plants more wood and leaf litter and black water, one of my females is now looking a bit rough, and always up the top gulping air almost, I may have to move her out and maybe one of the males back out, i might also have to add more females because i have read these are better in larger groups of mixed sex. I also need to clean dead plant leaf off the plants too hahahaha.

now i much prefer the advice of this site to the other, so where to go next or am i no the right track??
