Hi i have a male Apistogramma not sure the exact type but if i was to get some females would they still bread even if they are not the same type?

It is very likely that if your apistogrammas are very similar that they would hybridize. But why would you want to do that? You most likely would end up with ugly , possibly deformed fish which probably would be infertile in the second generation. Why not just pick up a true pair of apistos and breed them.

Give a pic of the Apisto and we'll try to ID it.

yes, they can breed with other types.

:iagree:

From the looks of it i would say you have Apistogramma sp. steel blue. I have been reading about those and some people say it is a hybrid apisto (kinda like flowerhorn) and some say that it is just a line bred variant (kinda like EBJD). I would try and get 1-2 sp. steel blue females and breed them! cool find though ive been hoping to pick one up myself very nice little fish.

Yeah, don't hybridize a fish intentionally unless you are setting out to create more designer pets, lol. In a 5 ft tank you could have 5 pairs with proper decor. I doubt all 5 would necessarily spawn but 2 or 3 of them will be quite prolific even if the others don't settle in the same.
