I've seen them once in my area but there was incredible gill-curl on them, I didn't pick them up. Haven't seen them since. Been reading on the subject but there isn't a whole lot of data on them. Has anyone kept them before?

Anything really... all I seem to find is what they eat in the wild and max size

I'm trying to get a LFS to do a special order for me. But so far no luck really...
I'm taking in my options as I'm looking to sell off a tropical gar that was bought as a spotted gar.

Feeding wise mine ate anything so they will take floating pellets no problem. Hikari cichlid Gold and cichlid staple went down well. They also love crane flies dunked into the tank, so I would expect any other live insect to be taken eagerly.

I had three previously and they used to fight amongst themselves a bit but generally didn't bother anything else. The single one I have now doesn't bother anything. I would say you either have 1, or 3 or more. 2 would be the combo to avoid IMO.

Once they have settled, they seem pretty bullet proof to me, being more than happy in a wide range of PH.

Tank mates I have had with mine include Black shark, various other Labeos, tinfoil barbs, Bala sharks, Lemon finned barbs, Peacock bass (when they were smaller), clown loaches, Red Tail chalceus and a bucket load of other stuff that escapes me at the moment. Pretty much anything that won't fit in their mouths and isn't big enough to snack on them should be fine.
