Well, after looking at monster tanks, or really any tank above 150 gallons, I've gotten quite frustrated. I'm looking into a monster FW tank. I've looked a lot on this site, but can't find an aprx. price on a monster tank. I'm looking around 2,500-5,000 gallons. My LFS gets fish that would be great for a monster tank sometimes, such as aro's, gars, shovelnose cats, and random other things like so. They even have a african goliath fish right now. Anyways, I want to know just some price around the cost for a tank around that size, whether it be DIY or not.

yeah what kind of tank are you looking for?
like john's a concrete block tank, or an all glass/acrylic tank?

yeah it all depends on wat ur making it outta

it always turns out to be about ~$1 per gallon... realy. my pond is 10,000 gallon and its going to end up costing about 10000, i want to make a 300-400 and it'll cost that. I wanted to make a large 3000 galon salt and it was going to cost about 4000-5000 one all is said and done, 2000 for materals.

Thats the ruel of thumb that i have seen... it you want to make it out of blocks its about $1.50-2 per block with concreet and sand for the mortor, then another 600-1000 for the glass... itll cost about 3000-4000...

If you dont want to commit that much you might want to scale it down but then there are always the exceprions like oh im a brick mason so i get free materials or my buddy fas a above ground pool... but i think the ~$1 per gallon is a good ber

You better re-think that $1 per gallon thing  I've got about $4k in my 1000 just in materials, and not including glass. Add another $500-$1k for the glass and your at about $5k. Of course, economies of scale comes into play here too. A 2500gal would probably not cost that much more than a 1000gal. Once you get to 10000, depending on construction methods, I would think 2x the gallonage for cost.

Probably a concrete block tank

Good choice :D Read above.

actually, johnptc's tanks inspired me. Sadly, this might not happen. Considering my age, and I'm probably one of the youngest on the forum (I'm 13) it's not too likely. But, I might be able to convince parents to allow me to allow me to do this. I'll update soon on progress

well at 13 i remember convincing my parents to take me to the mall and not grounding me... not building a monster fish tank. if i where your parents (not likey since im 22) i would look at it as a big learning experance and make you get a job to earn the money. since you are applying yourself, learning how to brick, seal manage time and money and so on...

But for your age i dont think that you are going to have the cash flow or influence to pull it off... I wish you luck but you need to umm... realive limits...

And i guess i aleways got lucky and got stuff cheap/free and i thing that the bigger you go the ratio of $ to Gallon decreases... and i would tend to agree that for a 1000 gallon you will end up spending about as much as a 2000-3000 gallons and the glass size is the main aspect of it, the bigger you go the more you will spend, and i mean huge... also you are limited by location and weight...

You must also take into acount the maintenance of running the tank. the pumps take lots of power, and it its salt then you may aswell forget it..., then there is the water costs, like doing a 20% water change is going to cost a fortune... then theres... ah well I'll stop there... it takes alot of cash and its easyer to just run a 100gallon or two...

dude i'm 16

and after 6 months i finally got my 210!!

just another year or so till I get my 2300

:]
hopefully

all you have to do is get your parents into the hobby and then it will be all down hill from there

:D
