this may be a dumb question, but i want to change from gravel to sand. how do you keep the sand clean (can you vacume it???) and how do i need to go about it?

i start a siphon with a regular 1/2 hose and hover over the bottom. Start your sand at the back of the tank so it is higher than the front. Most of the debris should fall forward and it is easier to clean.

and don't forget to poke the sand with the handle of your net so you don't get anaerobic pockets of H2S

so is sand alot more complicated than rocks??

You can vaccum sand you just have to have a slower water flow in your vac than gravel.As for stirring.malasian trumpet snails work great
