like most aqua clear filter's there are two chamber's of differant size's , well mine stay's full but seem's to lose suction and stop's flowing, the level of water drop's in side of filter some what.. . but the impellar is still spining and is submerged in water , if I fill it back up it run's normal 
I know this sound's weird but it really happen's not all the time but enough to show concern..
not sure if this is dew to water level in tank , I keep it slightly low so my Managusese does'nt try jump (have lid but that still is in no way stoping him from tying). the tank in question is a 55gal long, some what old tank but has new inhabitance 7.5 '' managuense & an 9'' TSN aswell as a 4'' rapheal catfish. my filtration is made of two fluval 404's an aqua clear 50 (filter in question) and a aqua clear 30 power head ..
