AquaC Remora 1200 Jet Pumping Out Water

Twice so far our AquaC Remora protein skimmer has pumped out so much water its cup has over flowed and filled up an additional 4x12 Tupperware container.

Both of the incidents have been after adding a new portion of water, probably around 5-10 new gallons of water in a 40 gallon tank.

All water conditions are met, we've had a nitrate spike before that was quickly taken care of and no where near the time of the skimmer mishap.

Can anyone figure out why our skimmer pumps about a half gallon of water out of our tank??

The problem may be that during a water change the water level relative to the skimmer is different causing an overflow in the cup, or more likely the viscosity of the water is changed slightly by the water change causing the skimmer to react differently.
