I have several Aquaclear 110's. I was wondering if using 4 bio media bags in the filter instead of the recommended 2 would double the bio load of the filter? Has anyone tried this? Any results? It seems to me that it would work. Just looking for any feedback.

if you can fit it in there then you can do it i would suggest keeping a sponge in there for mech filtration

More surface area = more space for bacteria to grow, but the amount of bacteria that grows is dependent upon ammonia levels (bioload). I mean, just because you add more space, doesn't mean bacteria levels will double. The bacteria still has to eat, and more space isn't going to help that -- you would have to have an increase in bioload, as well. Now, if you were going to do this in order to add more fish, I think it would work -- more bacteria could grow, and they would have enough to eat, because bioload would be greater.

It works.I have no carbon in mine and just use the sponge and 2 bio media bags and bio balls.Only thing is the water doesnt completely go through them all for a while until stuff settles. If you use the bio balls ya gotta stick them under the bio bags or they will float and knock the lid off.

Bio Balls is a great idea. Yes I use the sponge. I was referring to putting the bio media on top of the sponge. Yes I am adding xtra fish so the Bio load will not be a problem. I can't beleive I didn't think of this sooner.

Scrubbies would work too. They'd be cheap.

As stated above, adding extra media will give more area for bacteria to grow. This does not mean you will have more bacteria on your system though. You probably don't need it, testing the water params would let you know if you did. But adding it can't hurt so as long as your OK with spending a few bucks, go for it.

I don't use carbon either.
I double the bio on top of the sponge.

I've got lot's of extra Bio Balls lying around so I will just use them. Thanks alot for all of your help. The tanks are 50 breeders & I was using them to grow out African Cichlids, but now I am gonig to be using them to grow out many different predatory fish before they go into bigger tanks & my pond. So i was thinking i would need to support a higher bio load. Like stated above, can't hurt right.
