Old HOBs don't stop working. They just make noise due to worn out impeller. Replacing the impeller is not cheap, which costs half as much as a new filter. So buying old HOBs may not be a good deal, unless you don't care about the noise. I won't consider buying a used HOB unless it costs 1/3 less than online price.
