I see people saying carbon is bad for planted tanks. Should I remove the carbon bag that comes with my AquaClear 20? Does it matter THAT much?

Im using a small 10 gallon as my planted tank. Its going to be a simple tank. Just some kind of carpet using Hemianthus callitrichoides, dwarf hairgrass or some java moss and a few stem plants. Nothing crazy.

I will not be using any kind of tech. No Co2 or additives. Just a tank, a high power light, some gravel (maybe Eco Complete) and a filter. I plan on having the plants grow very slow.

I don't know that it matters "THAT much", but I don't use any carbon to filter my planted tanks. instead of the carbon bag, I put another filter sponge in my ACs . . . you could also put a bag of Purigen there

purigen is rechargable...

But in all honesty carbon or any other chemical filtration is not needed in fresh water aquariums period.

A water change will remove a million times more nasties than a carbon bag ever could. And if you want clearer water then switch to a finer mechanical media.

yep i agree with that statement. i sometimes use carbon to get out any medication i put in the tank but if your dosing fertilizer i think carbon takes that out too
