Has anyone noticed the sponges seem "less dense" in recent years? When I bought AC filters over 10 years ago the fibers seem tightly woven.
Now when I buy replacement sponges or new ACs they seem "looser packed" if that is the right word. Is that to improve speed of water flow? It seems to me that might reduce effectiveness of trapping debris. When I rinse sponges of both types from the same tank, the newer sponges seem "cleaner" like they may be less effective.

Haven't noticed this, but I actually like a sponge that's more open to trap just the larger debris. This allows me to use filter floss after the sponge to trap smaller debris. This way you can trap multiple size particles without haven't just the sponge clog up so quickly or having too much by-pass.

That is why I won't change original sponge unless it starts to deteriorate...like Dixon81 stated less quality replacement, manufacturer saves on cost. Also you may have to buy replacement sponges more frequently....more money for Fluval.

I have put floss/quilt type batting between sponges from time to time to liter small stuff. I have been known to keep sponges a few years before discarding.

There's no need to discard a sponge until it is literally falling apart.....which could take years and years
