AquaClear filter size for 40B

I am picking up a 40B today, and will also be getting a new filter. I really like AquaClears, so will be buying another one for this tank.

The 40B will be stocked with the following:

2x juvenile bluegill sunfish (~1")
1x juvenile bluegill sunfish (~2")
12x small minnows (max~3")
1x male checker barb
1x male odessa barb
1x small crawfish

The bluegill are just growing out until I can sex them, and then I will only keep one. No live plants, just driftwood and rocks.

The AquaClear 50 has 200 g/h max turnover, and the AquaClear 70 has 300 g/h.

If my calculations are correct, 200 g/h in a 40 gallon tank means all the water would be cycled 5 times an hour. 300 g/h would be 7.5 times an hour. Is this correct?

Is 5 times an hour enough for my tank? Or do I need to go with more?
 
I use AC's on all of my tanks from monster tanks to small planted tanks. I would use 2-AC50's. I use that on my 40B and it is ALWAYS crystal clear with NO maintenance other than WC's.
 
I would run an AC110, because I am always looking towards the future...upgrades! Bigger tanks need bigger filters.

Always go for more filtration..............The AC70 in this case will be perfect.............Later on, try hooking up a small internal filter to the project.............
 
I like the suggestion of the AC110. You can turn or move the intake over a bit to slow down the flow a bit... I've run an AC110 and Fluval 405 on a 40B at the same time before.
 
ac70 would work but you may as well spend the money now on the ac110 so you can use it in the future when you have to upgrade them to a bigger tank.When that day comes, the ac110 will already be there for you so you only will need to buy a cannister for the big tank for bio and use the ac110 for cleaning up the top water etc. Always try to think in the long run or you will always waste money.
 
I vote an AC70 at least and maybe an AC50. I like having two filters so I can clean one out without worry.
 
Thanks for the input guys.

I am reluctant to use anything else but a HOB as I have only ever used them and I don't really want to cut holes in the tank or dresser it will be sitting on to put in another type of filter...
