I used to have an aquaclear filter running on my 10 gallon, but i have no idea which model it is. I bought it used along with the tank and i took it out of storage and tested it to realize that the impeller assembly is broken (impeller blades snapped off, and the metal rod is corroded to the point where it broke). It is very old and looking top down it is about 8"x5". If i want to buy a new impeller assembly, which one should i get? Im also missing the impeller cover, is that really necessary for the filter to function?

I'm just looking for an economic choice for a filter on my 10 gallon, would buying a new impeller assembly be the best choice? Or should i just get myself and air pump and make a simple sponge filter? This tank is going to be used for quarantine.

I think it would be easier to just buy a new filter, it'll save you time of looking for a certain filter part.

I believe that all of the smaller Aqua Clear HOB models use the same impellor. You should be able to look up replacement parts for different sizes and compare the part #s to see if this is true...

It will be "cheaper" to buy the impeller... but "easier" to buy a new filter...

Since quarentine tanks are typically not in constant use, you will want to have a plan of how to keep the bacterial colony in it healthy when there are no fish in it.

Personally, I keep a sponge filter or two in my established tanks which I can plop into a 10~20 gallon as needed to create a temporary tank. I guess you could do the same approach with an HOB by sticking it's media in a mature filter on your mature tank (main tank).

just buy two sponge filters.

At Dr Foster & Smith the impellor will cost either $8.50 or $12, depending on which one you need...

At Dr Foster & Smith the AC 100 is $23 and the AC 300 is $30...

Under normal conditions the shipping on each item would be abotu the same, the impellor might be less...

Right now they have a flat rate shipping fee of $6...

so the prices are :

Impeller $14.50 or $18

New AC Filter $28 or $36...

Simple math shows that the new filter will cost approx double what a new impeller will cost...

You may be able to shop around for a better deal an any of the items. I just grabed prices off of Dr F & S as I knew how to find them quickly.

You may also be able to find the impeller cheaper locally, since it's shipping price is a considerable percent of the overall price...

Just saying they cost the same amout without actually verifying if that is true isn't a very good way to "help" someone....
