I wanted to share some photos...both new and old...very old...that do not include my favorite topic...cichlid fish.
My wife bought me a high end color slide/color negative scanner. I have literally thousands of slides from my travels in Europe (3 years) and Asia (3 years) as well as bags full of color negatives. I've been playing with the scanner as well as utilizing some different post editing techniques in PhotoShop. What follows is a sampling of the pictures processed thus far.
I visited the Concentration Camps at Dachau Germany in 1976. The significance of what I was seeing aside...the most amazing thing was the utter silence of the place. There were literally hundreds of folks walking around..and no one spoke above a whisper. Here are three photos from the memorial.
The Ovens.
A view from the inner wall.
The Showers...perhaps the most erie place to walk through. I stood in the middle of the shower and wondered how many people stood right where I was and their ultimate demise.
I was in the Keukenhof Gardens in Holland in 1975. The huge garden was a standing tribute to the tulip growing industry. Here are a few photos from the garden.
Another shot from Holland...the Amsterdam harbor.
I was in Manila in the Phillipines in 1978 and took this photo which I call "Dog with Vegetables" I named it that because the photo was taken in a small market. I was never really sure if the dog was a pet waiting for the owner...or if in fact the dog actually went WITH the vegetables. I have eaten dog (kay-GO-gee...not sure how its spelled) while in Asia...primarily Korea...so you never know.
I have a lot of photos of some of our National Parks. This is Bryce Canyon taken in 1977.
And two recent photos from this weekends SPCA fundraiser..."Pugs Peeper"
"The Harley Dog"
OK...here's a funny story. I worked with the American Forces Radio and Television division of the U.S. Army for close to nine years. In this capacity I had the great fortune to not only travel, but also interview and photograph many important and interesting people...Mohammad Ali, Alexander Haig, Terry Bradshaw, and even some of our past presidents. Take a look at the photo below. See the guy giving the camera the "stink eye"? President Carter was visiting the troops in Korea. He was an avid runner and wanted to jog with troops in Camp Casey...a military base literally along the DMZ (demilitarized zone) of South Korea. In my capacity as photographer I was often tasked with getting photos for the various news outlets (Associated Pres, UPI, TV Networks) So I was sent to photograph the president jogging with the troops. Because of the various stages of clearance along the way I was delayed in getting to the base. The run was already in progress...and I had no idea how long I would have to get my shot. So I started running down one of the base lanes hoping to get a shot of Carter leading the run with the troops. As I came around a blind corner...i literally ran directly into the president...knocking him on his ass. I was swarmed by Secret Service. When they realized it was an accident...I was so overwhelmed by what happened I could hardly breath...I was let go. I stepped back and got a few shots (motor drive for all the old school photo hogs) of Mr. Carter waving that he was OK. The "stink-eye" guy was obviously upset and never took his eyes off me.
