Aquaponics???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow, thats cool. I'm new, so I don't know about the science of it. From what I've learned so far and what the guy said, I don't know why it wouldn't work. I really really like it though. I've been trying to get my plants in my backyard going for a while. I have had to learn to stop tending them so much, I also put them on an automatic watering system and everything is doing a lot better now. :) I'm pretty sure unless someone comes up with a good reason why this shouldn't be done, I will set something like this up sooner or later. :)

And I agree that "stand" is terrifying.

There's gotta be someone that grows marijuana with that setup! HAHA

With a legal, medical license, of course.

I had an emergency and had to move my fish out of their tank, and into a temp 55 gallon holding tank. Well this was a rush job so I was just throwing the 55 together, I used sand that had been just sitting in a bucket.

Well I put the fish in the tank, and about 3 weeks later I noticed a vary familiar plant growing out to the sand.:naughty:

I let it grow for another couple weeks and then removed it, because I thought my fish might get the munchies or something. I had once found a seedling growing in a flower pot filled with water, and the top frozen over; very hardy plant.

plenty of people. Although most use it for veg production

Check out hellbents aquaponics thread. I saw it alittle while back.

makes sense . . . plants are very effective at removing ammonia and nitrates from an aquarium

personally, I like to keep plants in the tank, but if I had a situation where that was difficult or impossible, I could definitely see doing something like that

however, I would never keep a 48" wide tank on a 30" wide stand

That's what I was thinking

I had a chance to watch a couple aquaponic dvd's, Murray Hallam's aquaponics made easy and aquaponic secrets. in aquaponic secrets they show how to set up a grow bed with a overflow from a tank with a sump. so your grow bed is above your sump instead of your tank. i like that alot more so you don't need to lower your tank or put plants above it

The thing I know about aquaponics is that the more emphasis you put on the plant growth, the more Nitrate your fish will need to be tolerant to.

So If you're growing lettuce at "hobby" growth rates, you can get by with less Nitrates which will allow you more flexibility with your species choices, but If you are trying to grow something that is light an nutrient intensive (anything that fruits...like tomatoes, or...uh...a medical grow) then you will need a lot higher nutrient content in the water which will require a hardier fish to tolerate it.

Most Aquaponics people are using Tilapia...the food type... They are very hardy and very tolerant to high nitrate and other nutrients.

I breed and sell Tilapia. I would be doing aquaponics too, but I can't do it in my basement. Can't justify the artificial lighing expense, but It isn't too far away. Tilapia need long days to breed...but I need to put up a building before I can make it efficient on the scale that I would need to operate on. Since this is a business for me and not a hobby, It has to be profitable, not just cool.

I do a less direct version of aquaponics. I pipe all my fish water out onto my lawn and garden.
