One of our moderators duanes duanes just posted his small aquaponics endeavors

My 6500 gallon pond runs on aquaponics, and absolutely no water changes, although get water top-ups and a biannual filter maintenance

I'd be interested in knowing more about this. I'm currently in the pre-planning stages of a pond build and was thinking of ways to incorporate an aquaponics set-up or at the very least a bog garden to aid in filtration

Well my system is neither very elaborate nor very sophisticated.

It's a simple two stage filter. Built on top of the pond, and the two filter tanks are built on top of each other.

I use pop soil and 10mm gravel as filter media in both filter tanks, the media is bagged in a plastic mesh bag, for easy handling during cleaning especially.

I have chosen three plants
On the top filter tank I have used hydrocotyl verticillata as the plant is short and quite fast growing too.

The bottom tank has colocasia and heliconias.

Very interesting. So you pump water up to the first container, then it trickles down to the container with the huge purple Taro, which I love btw! Then it goes into the main pond? I'm trying to understand what I'm seeing in your pictures. What kind of livestock do you keep in it? Do you raise the fish to eat, or just for pets? What is the annual climate like in your part of India?

Yes, only the inlet is pumped, gravity does the rest.

This is the pond at home, only pets

My first set of fish that I kept in the pond

Now the fish that I keep in the pond

Tropical climate this part of the world, highs can be 42deg celcius and lows can be 16deg celcius, the pond is 6' deep so not much variation is observed.
