Does anybody know how to make or where to buy those really awesome backgrounds for their aquariums? I love the old tree stump and the nice synthetic rock backgrounds that you see at the public aquariums, but where can I find one? the back of my tank is 72"x24" and I have hang on filters. Any websites or if you all know anybody who makes them would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy,

if you'd like to prepare a real cool background yourself, then do this: Get paper/cardboard the size of the back of your tank. Spray construction foam (polyurethane) on it, let cure. This way, you create a 3D background. Paint with oil-based paint and let the colors flow into each other. Use brown and green, but also bright yellow (sparingly). It'll look awesome. I do that for all of my tanks. It looks real natural. Sorry it's kinda grown over with Vallisneria, but it's the only shot I could find right now. But when you click the pic you can zoom in.

i know people that use sealed chicken wire and coat it with foam resin and carve out rock designs.

Who cares if it is grown over, I would much rather have some sweet plants like that as a back drop! :headbang2

for now I just rolled on some high gloss black latex paint. It looks good with my drift wood, river rock, and sand. How long does the polyurethane backdrop last underwater? Although I sould have looked harder on MFK http://www.aquaterra-intl.com/

It's behind the tank. I do not care for adding anything big like a background in my tank that takes up volume.
