hi everyone. I am very close to getting a new 150 gallon tank, 72x18x29. getting the stand next week.

I was curious, the tank/stand combo will sit with the top of the tank at 58" high. my ceiling is a bit low in the only place that it can go in my basement (ceiling is 78" high). that leaves 20" of clearence above the tank to work with for cleaning etc.

do you think this will work? how much clearance do I need (I will be using a step ladder/chair etc) for maintainence on such a tall tank of course..

I really do not want to get anything smaller...

thoughts?

That should be plenty of room. You might be limited on how large of pieces of drift wood and such, that you could use but that's about it. Be sure to post some pics.

good point. I think with the Aqueon Versa glass tops they come with a clear strip that goes along the back to seal the tank pretty well that can be cut to accomidate my rena XP3's and the AC110 that I am going to use for filtration..

the rest of my basement does not have as low of a ceiling but the wall where this has to go is the only wall where I have the space (without being too close to my fireplace or too close to the bottom of my stairs). the stand is 76" long and the wall where it is going is 86 inches or something like that..

just build your own stand whatever size you want

I am not that handy unfortunately.

I am going with a metal stand similar to the ones that I have now, only thicker metal.

my LFS gets them from a company that makes them and they are great. these ones are 16+ years old and still strong as ever: and pretty cheap too:

I am so used to them after all these years, I don't really want to change. they are 28" high and the tank is 29" high..

its going to look massive in my (not very huge) basement lol

actually, see that is my parents house basement (where I have been living so far) but I bought a house and the only tank I am taking with me from the pic is the blue 65 gallon saltwater tank -its only from 2005 so its a baby..the rest of those setups are ancient.

the new future 150 gallon will be my new larger tank. I will only have these two and a smaller quarentine tank in my new fishroom in my finished basement -for now. I will probaly put a 55 in my living room with smaller fish and live plants at some point..

all the fish in that photo have been sold (exept the ones in the 65 salt which are coming with me). I will be getting new small monsters and growing them back up again in the 150 gallon.

all those freshwater tanks you see have been set up for over 16 years, so it didnt really make sense to take them- besides I really don't have the room for all that.. all old tanks, old equipment -some of the strip lights are still the orignal Hagen ones) its time for some new tanks. so the fish in them had to go (got almost $300 credit at the LFS for all of them -there are two 30g tanks not visible in the photo that were full of fish too -helps pay for the new 150)

I was doing some measuring and I think the 20" clearence is going to work. it will be tight and possibly a pain in the ass but I can make it work.

the benefits of the 29" tall tank will outweigh any minor nusiances for cleaning I think...

i was in the sameposition as you not to long ago. And i decided to paint my entire basement and ceiling with a water proof and mold and mildew resistant paint to help with any evaporation that does make it to the walls and such.
