this might be a stupid question but when and how long are the aquarium lights suppose to be on? i usually leave it off when i go to sleep, so there's about 7-8 hours of darkness. is that normal, unhealthy for the fish or should i change my ways?

I keep the light on part of the day, and my room has the light on all day except when I am sleeping. I just assumed that because their wild habitat would have natural sunlight it would be okay to do this.

As long as there is a dark period the fish will be fine. The longer you lights are on though, the more algae you will have.

well my purpose of the light is just to see my fish

thanks for the response... i figured it was natural to have a few hours of darkness since thats how it is in thier natural habitat (maybe a dim moonlight is the exception), but just had to make sure.

I always put my lights on just before dark so I can see and watch fish after work and feed them after dinner and watch to see all are getting food. Nights are lights out and days too until I get home and turn lights on before it gets dark, dont want to turn them on after dark might startle the fish.

I have my lights on a timer. They come on at 0930 and turn off at 2130.

So long as you dont exceed 12 hours of light in a tank that doesnt require coral or plant growth, your all good.
I wouldn't do more than 12 hours of light on a planted tank, it's a waste. I only run mine for 10 hours a day.
