I was looking at tanks and was wondering if the height or width of an aquarium have much effect on the fish.....as well as surface area, I.E. a square tank to one a foot wide and several feet long.
Thanks

A 55G is tight because it is a bad footprint standard 4'x1'. A 40g or 50g breeder is a much better footprint 36"x18" it makes for a decent size tank for a 10" to 12" cichlid imo. That's what i keep my red devil in. And he's doing great in there a lot better than the 55g he use to be in.12 Volt Man;3202494; said:it would be around 35 gallons depending on the height.
some people put a single oscar in a 55 but its tight.
a 65 gallon (18" wide) would be the min. for one single full size oscar IMO.
some say 75 though. bigger the better really. Oscars are very messy fish for their size.
eg. an 8" oscar probably eats/produces more waste than an 8" severum or other south american cichlid..
