Around.....
I was looking at tanks and was wondering if the height or width of an aquarium have much effect on the fish.....as well as surface area, I.E. a square tank to one a foot wide and several feet long.

Thanks

I guess it depends on what fish you want?

I saw someone post earlier that CA/SA cichlids do best in a standard rectangle-shaped tank, because they can set up more territories relatively further away from each other.

Width is important if you keep bigger fish, because obviously you dont want an 18" fish in an 18" wide tank.

Yeah fish about 12" to 24"

If 24" fish then you'll want something at LEAST 30" wide I'd imagine....36"+ recommended probably...

If I were looking to house 24" fish, and I had the room and could afford it, I'd be looking to get something in the neighborhood of 8-10 feet long x 3 feet wide. Thats just a guess though, my biggest (and only) tank is a 125g (6'L x 18" wide x 22" tall).

there is a general rule of thumb that is the fish needs roughly a tank as wide as the fish is long so it can turn and a tank at least three times as long as the fish.

so if I have a 12" oscar which is a average adult length I would need a tank that's got a foot print of at least 12"x36".

but if you have something like a knife or aro you can mess with this rule. I personally have seen 3 30" aros in a tank that was 24x72. and they were just fine b/c aros are very flexible fish.

So your ideal tank size all depends on the fish you are going to keep and what their adult size will be.

So do plenty of research before buying a tank or a fish.

How many gallons would a standard 36"L x 12"W tank be? (I know, depth (height) is needed to determine total gallons)..

Whatever it is, that just seems way too small for a 12" Oscar...but I agree w/ most of what you said ;)

it would be around 35 gallons depending on the height.

some people put a single oscar in a 55 but its tight.

a 65 gallon (18" wide) would be the min. for one single full size oscar IMO.

some say 75 though. bigger the better really. Oscars are very messy fish for their size.

eg. an 8" oscar probably eats/produces more waste than an 8" severum or other south american cichlid..

A 55G is tight because it is a bad footprint standard 4'x1'. A 40g or 50g breeder is a much better footprint 36"x18" it makes for a decent size tank for a 10" to 12" cichlid imo. That's what i keep my red devil in. And he's doing great in there a lot better than the 55g he use to be in.
