I own a 40 gallon breeder with mesh top. It holds one 3inch red ear slider. The tank is filled 3/4 of the way due to the space required between the basking light and platform. I want to raise the platform to the tank's full capacity level, but to do this, I need to raise the mesh to give not only the light space, but the turtle as well.

Is there some type of plexi glass spacer I can place thats roughly 6-12 inches tall that I can place on top of the tank but under the mesh top? Thanks.

heres a rough photo of what I need:

It would be pretty simple to build an extension box out of wood. Look at the DIY section under stands and see some of the canopy ideas. These could be easily modified.

Over at Redearslider.com there is a forum with tons of ideas to do just what you are trying to do.
It is called an ATBA (Above Tank Basking Area). Most are DIY - there are tons of pictures in this forum topic.

If you need an off the shelf solution you can Google Reptology Turtle Topper.

Most people that DIY an ATBA usually use a combination of wood and plexi and sometimes light diffuser (egg crate).
