I’ve always been partial to Eheim Jager heaters - maybe a 250 watt? Grab an Inkbird temperature controller to go with it, just for safety’s sake. I started using them when one of my old heaters got stuck “on” and cooked some fish. It’s worth the cost for the piece of mind.

Couldn't agree more Eheim heaters are the most reliable I have found. I've tried more brands than I can count. Failure after failure, Got lucky and only lost fish in q tank due to these failures, replaced all with Eheim and haven't had another issue.

I don't use many heaters nowadays, but when I did I was also fan of Jagers. But, sadly, while browsing the website of one of my favourite Canadian aquarium/pond suppliers (Pets & Ponds), who carry numerous lines and brands of heaters, I found this interesting disclaimer on the Jager page:

"Despite their former reputation for a quality product Jager heaters are now the most unreliable heater we offer. Jager heaters are prone to highly irregular temperature fluctuations."

Sounds as though Jager has followed in the footsteps of countless other once-trusted brands; i.e. establish a reputation for building a quality product, then begin to rely upon that reputation while cheapening the quality to increase profits. Very sad.

I also replace every 3 to 4 years as recommended. I wasn't even getting a year out of some of the other brands.

I don't use heaters that often anymore either, but when I did, Eheim Jager was my favorite.
If the quality is truly slipping, I'm glad I have a bucket full of older Eheim Jagers in storage.

Last 10 years I've had maybe 2 jager heaters, 3-4 aquaone(I think) jagers didn't last any longer than the aquaones, annoyingly. And weren't available in any shops anywhere when the previous heater died. Always died cold, my inkbird hasn't done any good to save me from cooking the tank, but a few times gave me a low temp warning when the heater died.
