I want to raise 3 varieties of feeders in the stand under my tank... Problem is I only have enough room for a single 10 gallon (barely). None of the foods I plan raise need deep water (blackworms, Ramshorn Snails, Ghost Shrimp) but would do better with more surface area.

So here's the solution I came up with... Aquarium in a drawer:nilly:

Basically I want to have 3-3.5 gallon aquariums, Each would only be about 4" deep, this leave room for me to put in a mini- CCFL light above each tank as well as putting in air driven sponge filters. at 3.5 gallons, max weight in each drawer would be 35lbs. I'm thinking of just using fiberglass/plywood to make the drawer/tanks.

Provided I went with drawer slides strong enough to support the weight, and put lids on them to prevent any sort of splashing while pulling them out...

Would this work?

I would use Rubbermaid (or the like) containers rather than trying to build those yourself. Less hassle, not very expensive, and they will work just as well.

only problem with rubbermaids... If I use the pre-fab drawers, I have no place to attach the lights above each drawer. I guess I could use tubs as a liner in the drawers, would make cleaning easier and I wouldn't have to work with fiberglass.

Couldn't you just put all those feeders in one 10g?

Maybe.... But wouldn't the ghost shrimp eat the blackworms?

If you do make it work, put support legs under the front of the tanks, so that when they are pulled all the way out all the weight isn't on the drawer slides.

Interesting to say the least. However....how about just taking a 10g and placing "vented" dividers of some sort it in. By that I mean like plexi glass with slots cut in them as dividers and using foam to cover the slots to keep occupants in their section. This would still allow for water to flow from each compartment. Then you could just use one filter and light etc.

I thought about just dividing up a ten gallon tank, but the whole reason for the drawers is to have more surface area available... The Blackworms live only in the gravel, so if I Only have a third of the tank available I'd lose a lot of space. If I used a couple of drawers I'll have 88% of the floor space of a 10 gallon available instead of a 33%

I did some checking at menards, If I use the rubbermaid tubs I found there as liners in plywood drawers, each drawer would be 30lbs max, and I found draw stainless steel drawer slides that can support 35lbs.
