I have a 72"x18"x24" tank that I want to set up. The only problem is that there is no center brace across the top of the tank. I have looked online for glass tops for the tank, but they are all for tanks with braces in them. The tank is older. My father in law has it setup as a planted tank in the early 90's. He didn't use a lid for it at the time and doesn't know where the original lid is. The tank holds water fine. It is made of half inch glass and has a double pane on the bottom.

Does anyone have any idea how to make a lid for this tank?

I know, but there is no brace. The trim at the top shows no sign of the brace ever being there. At first I thought they might of broke off, but my father in law said there were never any braces.

Because it is an older tank, I'm sure the OP is correct that there never was center braces because the manufacturer determined it didn't need any.

You have a couple of choices to use store bought glass lids. You can have your local glass company cut 4 glass strips that are at least 1/4" thick x the tank frame width. These would sit in the trim lip on the left side, right side and the remaining 2, evenly spaced in the middle. Then the store bought lids would rest on these strips. By using 4 glass strips, the glass canopy lids would be level across the top of the tank.

Another choice would be to locate plastic T-shape track that is used for suspended ceiling panels. Most home improvement stores should carry this product. You can just cut the track to fit the tank trim but install it with the long leg of the tee facing upright. The glass lids would then rest on these, as if they were center braces. A dab of hot glue or silicone would help to secure them in place to the tank trim piece so they don't slide around.

Thanks Deeda! I think I'm going to use the suspended ceiling track. I have some 1/4" thick glass I'm going to use for the actual lid.

No problem. Please post any pics, if you can, of the finished fix. This will help others with a similar problem. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
