Being in Memphis and not having to go to work every day, I was thinking about starting an aquarium setup and maintenance business. There are some areas with nice homes and a lot of businesses that could benefit from this service. Not needing the income to live on, it could be extra cash. Can you guys please list some pros and cons about this? Start up would not be too costly and I would offer one person a free set up.

Once you start this business you have to stay committed or fish could be lost. That part time business done in your free time could easily become full time...just like your own personal tank/maintenance is. Will your own tank/s suffer...you know, the "mechanic drives the clunker" syndrome? Carpenter lives in a shack?

I guess if you had enough expertise and experience with both Fresh and Salt tanks, and was ready to deal with any size tank then no reason why not to??? although i'm not sure if it will kill your own enjoyment for the hobby constantly dealing with tanks...

i maintain a monster tank 1000gallon frontosa tank at a local dentist near me, i go in weekly i get 50$ all i asked lol, and i get to keep any frontosa fry that i come across etc... i do it for my own enjoyment and the free fry is just a little bonus :)

Research your competition and learn what the market potential is . . . My dentist has a professional tank guy who comes in weekly and works on his 55 gallon. Also, the top LFS in my town actually has a tank maintenance person who goes out and does set up and maintenance. They've installed a huge saltwater tank at a major auto dealership. Also, you might want to market yourself with a website that will display your work and detail your services. Potential clients want to see the tanks that you have set up and maintain.

Finally some replies. Thanks. If its part time, And I only have about 3 clients a week I think it wont hurt my own tank. I have kept salt and freshwater but Im no expert. I have enough experience to set up and maintain, Im not a fish expert of chemist. I actually dont think there is any competition and there are a lot of big nice homes by the Mississippi river and downtown appts.

being an expert is important though, as many people that will get this kind of service might be (as an example) wealthy folks who want an impressive looking reef tank for as an attractive piece of furniture/decoration but know nothing of aquariums.

Honestly, there are no experts. we all have to do research at times

Yeah but when you are going to be handling peoples assets it is important to know what you are doing. In any situation. Good luck.
