So I plan on painting the back of my tank because I'm not a fan of the things you just tape to the back, so what would be the safest thing to paint it with?

I'd think you could use anything if you plan on painting the outside of the tank.
I have heard that if you use plasti-dip, it can be peeled off like a rubber coating if you ever want to remove it.
Yeah the plan is to to paint the outside, I was just worried about toxicity of paint

There should be no toxicity issues unless the paint is inside the aquarium. I think that using plasti dip would be a good idea since it is easy to remove.

I just used indoor latex house paint on my tank rolled on with a roller.
I've removed several different types of latex paint, scrapes of really easy with a razor blade. And as long as it's on the outside I think you're ok in terms of toxicity, but I know people use Krylon Fusion spray paint for pieces that go in the water
