hi,someone local is selling a "terrarium"
it is 40 gallons,all glass, 1/4" thick,with screen top.
they say terrarium i think cus it has a screen top.
they said it wasnt designed for fish but it has silicone in all the corners.
they did say they filled it up once and it didnt leak but didnt leave it in long.
anyone have any suggestions?will it be ok for fish?
thanks

even terrariums have silly-cone; check the trim & bottom for marks/lables. if you get lucky there will be proof.

it's probably the AGA 40g breeder critter cage. do NOT fill it with water.

they DO make 40g AQUARIUM tanks though.

One of the national chain stores recently switched their '40g Breeder' Reptile aquarium into a 'water-tight' version. It will say it right on the packaging.

Older tanks will not have this feature ;)

Water tight doesn't necessarily mean that it is designed to hold water though. What they usually mean by water tight is that you can mist/water/put wet stuff in it, etc. and it won't leak. If I'm thinking of the same tank, it used to come with a hole and rubber gromet in the bottom. Maybe they just got rid of that? You could test it, but I wouldn't want to risk spilling 40 gallons of water on my floor to save a few bucks.

The 40 gal terrarium has a hole in it to allow a cord to go through the bottom, a 40 gallon breeder will hold water, it is longer and shallower to allow for max surface area for O2 exchange, since in a breeding tank you don't want a power filter, or even UGF. The terrarium will hold water as long as the proper steps are taken to ensure the hole is sealed. There is also the 40 gal turtle tank, which has one side that is half high glass to allow for a power filter on the side, effectively just 20 gallons.

Ive filled terrariums w/ water for short periods of time, but I havent left it in long. To me the sealant feels different, but it could just be my imagination
