aquarium safe sand??

I bought some white play sand (for sand boxes), at walmart, got it home and the bag said not for aquarium use on it. Does this mean i cant use it even if i boil it? I have read lots of threads on here recommending play sand. I put it in my ten gallon after i boiled it anyway. It still has to cycle so there arent any fish in it. I am thinking that it said not for aquariums because it didnt come sanitized........Let me know what anyone thinks...

hmm im not too sure about play sand in aquariums in detail.. but i have seen some people use it in their tanks... i guese just be carefull that teh sand does not get into you filter intake.. rinse it out very well first =O

Maybe pool filter sand would be better... as long as u dont have any bigger fish that might swollow the sand.. cuz it might be sharp.. well teh good thing is that the grains are heavier which make them stay on teh ground more.. so when it does get move.. it does not float much in the tank, means less chance of getting sucked in your intake.. and also itz compact soo no dirt or waste will get between it.. you just syphon watever is on top of the sand. Looks Good clean and white with tiny black specs and price is good too only 8$ for 50 lb =D

But i could be missing some information.. here... so hopefully some one else will post.. i hope i helped out some how

I would never use Walmart play sand. Only quikrete playsand. They are not the same thing.

I have use any and all play sand in all my tanks with out isues for numersous years.

Just make sure you rinse it very good to get the floating crap out of it before you put it in your tank.

Anything that says "not safe for aquarium use" probably means it. Play sand from lowes or home depot does not say that. OP, I would take the walmart sand back and buy a bag of quikrete playsand from lowe's or home depot. Or better yet, Pool Filter Sand from a pool supply store.

the process in which walmart obtains/packages the sand may contain chemicals that wouldn't be harmful to humans, but may be extremely toxic to aquatic life. Not to bash walmart for selling tainted products used for children , but levels of pesticides in the play sand would not be at all surprising to me.

All the sand I buy from homedepot clearly says do not use in an aquarium. It's a silica based sand that is packaged that way (from what I have been told) to discourage people from using in their aquariums only beacuse the same company sells "aquarium" sand for a higher price to pet centers.

It is true that not all hardware store sand is the same. Even from the same brand, product specifications can be different. Where I live, it is safe for aquarium use and does not have an aquarium warning. Bottom line and my personal opinion: if it says don't use it then don't use it.
