so cal
hey guys bought some pool filter sand for $10 to redo my aquarium, guy said it was 100% silica sand but there isnt a contents label on the bag only a huge warning description on the back saying not to breath in the dust. Any idea if its safe to put in the tank after rinsing?

I doubt very many people have tried that particular brand of sand, the only sure way to find out really is to put it in empty aquarium, then buy some feeder fish and see if they live longer than a day. If they do live, then you know its safe to use.

Oh, and don't forget to rinse it very well before adding it to the tank

It should be fine. Just make sure to wash it alot before putting it into your tank.

The reason it says don't breath in any dust is because fine particles are not very good for your lungs hahaha. Seriously though, it should be perfectly fine, just make sure you rinse it out good and well like everyone else said.

Pool filter sand is definitely safe for aquarium. The bag I get from Lesiles Pool Supplies doesn't have any labeling, just a brown paper bag but it's pool filter sand. Getting it from a pool place is a good indication it's pool filter sand other than that, I wouldn't know what it's made of. I love it and so do the fish.

Being pool filter sand, it should be a good grain size. I sometimes use play sand, but I find it's normally too fine.

All silica sand has that warning on it because breathing the dust basically coats your lungs in tiny shards of broken glass. Rinse it before using it, and these particles will wash out and not bother your fish

i am not a big fan of pool sand because it is very large grain. to me it looks kind of unnatural. i like regular play sand. but other than that it is fine.

I'm not sure what difference it makes but it says right on the bag blasting sand.
