Why are you using salt at all? The only need for it in FRESHwater tanks is to treat known issues (or special salts at low doses for fish naturally found in extremely alkaline waters, like rift lake cichlids).
Using salt all the time in a freshwater tank will cause harm long term. These fish are not adapted to such salinity levels, especially the normal dosing recommend on the packaging of these products. These are freshwater fish, there is no need to add salt all the time. Long term use can cause kidney damage.
Have it on hand in case the fish show signs of significant stress or develops illnesses that can be treated with salt, but don't add it all the time.
If all water has salt then tap will too, so why add it? Many aquarists do things that are not ideal long term without a single visible effect short term.
These fish are not adapted to such salinity levels. The recommended dosing for special cichlid lake salt for Lake Tanganyika (one of the most alkaline bodies of water on Earth) is one tablespooon per 20 gallons, the recommended salt dosage for 'freshwater salt' is one tablespoon per five gallons. That is 4x the concentration of the hardest body of water freshwater on Earth, and that is the recommendation for ALL freshwater tanks, including those from the super soft Amazon. There is no need for aquarium salt all the time in freshwater tanks. Long term it will cause harm because their kidneys are being forced to deal with many times more salt than they would ever experience in nature.
I don't see the reason why people feel the need to add salt to freshwater water. Freshwater fish thrive in freshwater. Salt does not make freshwater fish thrive, and at best is just a waste of money. Adding salt to your water is like adding 4 drops of dechlor per gallon, just pointless.
