I saw at the petstore, that they have Aquarium salt for freshwater.I notice that some people use it for their freshwater set up,I am just not 100% sure if its safe to use in my fish tank with the Oscar,Jack Dempsey, and pleco eater.Does anyone else have experience of using aquarium salt for their set up with Cichlid fishes?

Yeah they wont mind it actually limits some bacteria growth and also Helps their color out to. Its safe to use dont worry just make sure you put to much salt in the water cause that wont be good. i believe its one tablespoon for every 5 gallons

This is a hot topic, some add it at every water change, others only add it to treat ich or other conditions. Whatever you choose, you can save a lot of money by buying it in bulk; salt for water softeners, usually called 'solar salt'. It's the same stuff and you can get a 40lb bag for about $5 at any home improvement store.

Wow thanks for this. I have been using "aquarium salt" as directed (1 tbsp/5 gallon) at every water change (once a week) and I have a jack dempsey, oscar, convict, firemouth, 4 silver dollars and a pleco. They are very healthy, nicely colored fish and have yet to see any bacteria growth or get any diseases (except for after this I will because I jynxed myself). Tanks been running for just under 3 months. I would recomend what jcardona1 seeing as aquarium salt at the LFS is like 8 bucks for a quart... wah wah waaaaahh

What would be a witty thing to post for my 400 th, hmmm, oh well! lol

And I have used it for my 75 gallon to help with ich and just general health, I swear by it, but I did not know it was the same stuff! Stupid marketing! I am going to buy a bag asap from walmart or something, maybe even just go to the par rents house and steal a quarter bag.

Thanks for the great advice!

Haha, we all gotta learn sometime! Just make sure it's the plain solar salt, small crystals. There are also some called "system saver" pellets, these contain an additive that you don't want in your tank.

You don't need it..... that's why it's called "fresh" water lol.....

Seriously though, you really do not need to use it as a routine. I do not.....

Burt :)

Burt is right. And with the constant adding of salt, you risk creating salt resistant strains of pathogens.;)

Salt is naturally occurring in most freshwater sources in minute quantities so it is 100% ok. Just dont put in too much.

Most tapwater contains enuff traces of salt to effectively "balance" the fish thru homiostasis. Problem with adding salt to fish tanks regularly is that you may loose the ability to fight off external parasites as parasites can adapt to living in stable salinity. It's actually the fluxuation in salinity that kills the babies.
