I have a 30g cichlid tank
I'm gonna start adding salt to the aquarium (yes I know it's a hot topic)
1tbl/5g ratio
My question is when doing a water change of 50% do I add salt for the full tank amount at the ratio mentioned or do I add salt on the amount of water i've replaced so I'm adding salt on approx. 15gallons?

Thanks for your help

Its not critical as long as we are talking 1 or 2 tablespoons. It could be a cumulative issue if you don't take the same amount of water out every water change. In other words, if you take out say, 10gal, but salt for 11 gallons, every time, the cumulative could be as much as 11 table spoons over 11 water changes. It may seem a small amount, but this could be stressful for the fish. If you went the other way and salted on the light side every time, you would never over-salt...
Point is, it is important to keep the ratio as close as possible. I will alternate, one month add salt, next month, no salt. Alternating keeps the guess work out of the ratio, so if I'm not perfect every time, then the next few water changes will flush the salt out of the system anyway.
