LV Golden Knights!
I add aquarium salt after every water change, am i supposed to be doing this all the time or only when the fish get sick? I've been putting it in my tank for the past year and never really thought about it.

I used to, but then I stopped. Didn't see a reason to continue adding it. Fish seemed fine with our without. Now I just use it for treating ich.

It is not necessary, in my experience.

Besides, you could create a salt-resistant strain of ich or fin rot in your tank. It's best to only use it when needed for treatment.

That had nothing to do with his question.:screwy:

I think this is one of those things where everybody has their own opinion. I havs Pbass and when they were little the tank got ich 6 or 7 times. I didnt realize how prone they were to it, but I started using salt, and never got ich again. I did this for about 6 months until I upgraded my tank and then I stopped. No issues since I stopped, but my uncle did the same thing on a similar tank and had an outbreak of some fungus/rot thing a week later. He still uses it, I don't. It's not needed, but if you feel better adding it, I dont see the harm in doing it.

I use Aquairum salt made from Evaporated Seawater with each water change. It helps with electrlytes on the water which IS important...

Now, fish from difference regions require different balances in water chemistry compared to others. I think that this is the best thing that you could research. Find out the type of chemistry that your fish are naturally from and work towards that. Just because some fish are tank raised, doesn't mean that this changes their genetic needs so that they become less dependant on or more adapted to certain (or the lack thereof) water chemistry. In the long run, fish health will have longevity...

I raise and breed african cichlids so this is something that is more necessary that say SA/CA Cichlids because of the water region...

Link with some interesting talk about aquarium Chemistry...

P.S. If you have been adding salt this whole time I wouldn't just stop... It would be better if you gradually added less and less with each water change...

I would say that unless the fish that you have requirer salt or you are treating a disease then it is not necessary to add salt at every water change.
