I have seen a lot of disagreement on what size aquarium fits into what category of water volume so this is my attempt to create a more standardized guide to aquarium sizes.

Pico .01-5 gallons

Nano 5-10 gallons

Average 10-29 gallons

Above average 29-55 gallons

Large 55-90 gallons

Extra large 90-125 gallons

Extra extra large 125-210 gallons

Extra extra extra large 210-360 gallons

Supreme 360-500 gallons

Monster 500-1000 gallons

Public aquaria* 1000+ gallons

So what do you guys think? Do you agree with the sizes listed and their categorisation?

*Public aquaria is used as a unit of measurement and does not necessarily mean the aquarium is public.

Personally I dislike this for a couple reasons that I don’t want to explain tonight so I’ll put the way I’d do it.

Micro 0.~ to 0.9 gallons
Nano 1 to 5 gallons
Small 10 to 20 gallons
Decent 29 to 40 breeder
Normal 55 to 75/90
Large 75/90 to 220
Huge 220 to 500
????? 500 to 1,000
Monster 1,000 to whatever number you want.

I think you were doing them based off of size alone while I’m going based off of popularity. Also going a bit off of size for the smaller ones.

Haha, let's make this one a sticky. Already we have some very clear and informative answers. It can be the newbies go to guide on fish tank size.

And duanes, you really need to be getting on to your local council to get those ruts fixed. I'm a keen cyclist, if I ever went down a rut as big as the ones you have in paradise you'd need climbing rope to pull me out. Wow!

Honestly what is what varies. But who cares? What do we need standard tank sizes for? For the guy rocking loads of 5 gallon tanks for his bettas then a 75 gallon would be enormous. To the guy with a 75 a 500 would be insane. Some people even laugh on 500 gallons. Each to their own on this I guess :)

The point of my hyperbole is to make people think before putting any fish in a too small size e body of water.
When I use the term puddle, or even large puddle, I hope it puts into perspective what might live comfortably in that space.
Could Guppies, some killifish, a Betta live in a puddle? ...yes.
Would you ever find an oscar in a puddle? No.
Do you think you might find Parachromis in a culvert? I doubt it.
Might you find a young pair in a even a drainage ditch? maybe, but more likely a large pond.
Might you find a red tail cat, in anything less than a large pond? I doubt it, maybe some juvies temporarily.
