Hello everyone,

I would ask you, what would be a decent aquarium'size for an european pike, which could reach to more than 1,30 metter ( but it s realy rare)
thanks

I have not kept this species, but scaling up from Esox americanus, I would say the minimum tank size would be the fish's maximum length multiplied by 1.5 for the width and by 2 for the length; this would give you about 2m X 2.6m. A depth of 0.75m should be adequate.

Tanks of this size built from cement or plywood with a glass or acrylic window are not uncommon. Look in the DIY forum here for some examples.

its not even worth contemplating to be honest... im not sure what the french record is, but the british record is 50+ lbs i think... so its getting on for 6ft. thats a big fish. tanks probably wouldnt viable. think lakes.

if your after a european predatory fish... why not try either Zander (Sander lucioperca), or perch (perca fluvatillis). zander max out at about 3ft ish and perch at about 2ft, so both are do-able. especially with some of the tanks on MFK.

yes you r maybe right, well Sander lucioperca and perch were in my list, but i asked for the biggest fish :)
Well it s not for now, but i realy want to make a huge aquarium, and i was thinking about the population, so that s why i asked for a pike ^^ , maybe i will just continue with my 2 hoplias malabaricus :p we will see^^

id prefer a tank with perch rather than a pike. i like pike dont get me wrong... but i think a monster tank with 2-3 perch, each a foot long would look better than the same tank with a single pike. theyre ambush predators too, so they probably wouldnt move much, but it may take to aquarium life better than we think, quickly learning who feeds them, so they may become active in aquaria. instead of lying in wait for their next meal.

perch also have the personallity of oscars too. so they could be trained to do tricks if you like that sort of thing. they are also a more active fish. theyre shy at first, but quickly open up...
