Whats up guys its been a few years since ive been on here, ive been busy getting married and moving also having a new baby girl, and now starting a new job truckdriving regionally and cross country. ive been planning to start getting my first new tank together in 3years. After i got married and stuff i had to give up all my other tanks. so now instead of a bunch of tanks im just gonna go with one big one.. anyways the thing is, being that i would be driving all the time i wont be able to take care of it or monitor whats going on with everything like my temp, water chemistry, or water changes as often a im supposed to. i mean my wife could feed them but that as far as it goes with her,lol.. and i dont want to pay for someone to up keep it for me when thats actually one over my favorite things about have\ing a tank believe it or not, , so im still on the fence with doing this build, but today when i was speaking to a friend about it he told me that they have some kind of aquarium monitor or somthing that can scan you water temp and check your levels along with a whole bunch of different stuff that it also do and it can send updates to your phone and pc. and you can control features and equitment from your phone? now i never heard of anything like this but if there is such a thing this would be exactly what i would need to get started. as for water changes i guess i could set up somthing to do what this pc program does some how, i would just need to sit and think up somthing. but if this is a real thing, does any one have any info on it like whats it called hows it work and most important whats it gonna cost me. and does this work on any phone ot just iphones cause thats what my friend said any help wil be great thank you guys

What you need is an aquarium controller, it's used more by the reefing community but it does have its uses in freshwater tanks as well. There's a few different ones out there but I have the Neptune Apex. The package I got came with an display module, aquacontroller module, EnergyBar8, a temperature probe and a pH probe and was around $500. Basically what it does is you can program it to shut off/on each of the outlets on the EnergyBar8 when certain criteria that you set are met.

ie. Temperature control - I have programmed my heater outlet to turn on at 79.0F and to turn off at 79.2F. The heater itself is set to turn off at 81F as a fault protection. Now I never have to worry about that heater sticking on and frying my tank.

Circulation pump control - I have programmed my Koralia to turn off when the lights go off and turn on when the lights go on, just to reduce the current and let my fish rest a bit at night.

I have it set up to send me an email if I lose power to the energy bar, or if the temperature rises above 82F, and a few other things. You can use water on floor sensors, Auto-Top off and automatic water changer systems, you can time your lights, dim your lights according to sunrise/sunset calendars, lunar cycles, all sorts of different stuff. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. And yes once you set it up to work over your home network you can access it by PC. You can also set it up to access it from anywhere in the world by PC, or by your smart phone. It's very, very cool.

Here's an idea of what one of the web and the iphone interfaces look like.
