Hey everyone, while staring at the fish tanks last night I had an idea, not sure if its good or bad, but heres my situation. Im a new young father, my first son was born two weeks ago yesterday so money is tight for me right now. I will be upgrading my 120gal to hopfuly at least a 180gal, although a 200gal would be preferred. Now insted of buying new Im looking at used for my cash concerns. But my real idea last night was - do I really need a new stand? Or could I just extend the one I currently have by building extra supports for all sides of the stand? My other option is to contact a good family friend of ours who is a carpinter and see if he would be willing to make something up for me. My girlfriend has given me the ok for upgrading the current main tank as the fish we have - have been with us for years and she knows my aquariums mean alot to me, as long as I dont setup anymore.

So do you guys think it would even be possible to extend the aquarium stand I already have? Or should I try contacting our carpinter friend to build a new one from scratch? The stand im currently useing is a store bought Stingray stand.

Firstly Many congratulations to you on your baby boy :) and "new young father"?! thats a good one.... LOL

with the stand i would take the help of a carpenter or DIY... but for extending ur tank i guess pics would be a good start....

Lol by new young father I ment, im 22 and wasnt expecting a baby this early, but I have no regrets about it and im enjoying my time with him very much. Currently my camera is at the girlfriends house as shes a photography nut and has already taken over 300 pics of our son.

As for extending the tank I was thinking of useing very large screws to attach new wooden bases directly to each side of the tank, other than that I know my best option would be to build one myself (dont have the time between work, my son, and the dog) but I cant afford to put out all this mon
ey right now. Im going to call my dad later tonight to see if he can
contact our carpinter friend and take it from there.

thats a good start with taking advice from ur carpenter friend... take it from there... extending with a current tank on top of it sounds dicey... good luk hope u figure somethin out... keep us posted :)

Well I spoke to my dad earlier, he sent his buddy an email stating that I would like to speak with him reguarding building a new stand, so ihope to hear from him soon. I have a few ideas on what I would like todo if extending my current stand is an option, I drew up some spe s on paper. But I wont know for sure until I speak with him (hopfuly this weekend). If not im sure paying him to build me something would still be cheaper than buying a brand new stand from the lfs or even a large metal stand from the hardware store. I still have plenty of time as im looking to upgrade in june or july.

you should consider building it yourself with advice from your carpenter friend. you could build it a little at a time with the cost of materials spread out over a period of time. the intial framework would have to be completed at one time but bying the materials over a few weeks

always enjoy the little one because they don't stay little for long, my oldest is a marine and my youngest is 6'2".
