OK so over this weekend I'm gonna build me a stand out of 2" round tubing but I was wondering if it will need some sort of cushion or something in between the steel and the tank itself.??

What kind of tank? Flat bottom glass, acrylic?
Is the base going to be made of round stock as well?

I've got it figured out I think, I can make the skeleton out of steel and then put a wooden top on it

If it's your standard glass tank with black plastic around the top and bottom perimeter, I think just using 3/4" plywood is advised. I don't think you should be using the Styrofoam pads.
