I have a 48 in X 12 in X 19 in (LxWxH) aquarium, and I want to get some cool fish for in it. I want to stick with freshwater fish, and I was thinking along the lines of cichlids. Does anyone have any ideas?
Community tank with angelfish(or discus if you're rich)
Decorate it with plants and driftwood, add a school of corycats, and some other small schooling fish to make the tank more active
I like the idea (it sounds awesome), but I want to try something on the aggressive side... I've gotten kind of bored with having community tanks over the past 10+ years lol.
Some of the african cichlid tanks here look nice, and the way people set it up with a ton of rocks seems like a nice setup(for someone like me who only has plants and driftwood). I have no idea which fish are which tho, my LFS sells them as "assorted african cichlids"
or maybe a single big SA/CA cichlid, electric blue jack dempseys look nice but they're expensive
A 55 is kinda narrow to keep most of the big predatory CA/SA cichlids like oscars, jags, green terrors, and so on. Convicts, jack dempseys, and festivums are good smaller cichlids. Some of the smaller pike cichlids would also work; there's a good article here, including info on which species will fit in a 55: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/intro_pike_cichlids.php
Mid-sized centrarchids are another option. Warmouth, rock bass, dollar sunfish, and longear sunfish are attractive predators that are suitable for a 55.
The jack dempseys and pike cichlids look pretty cool; any ideas on any of the African cichlid species? I already have a pond with centrarchids in it, so I'll pass on a tank of them.
get some lake malawi mbunas. you can make really nice rock setups and caves and all, then you get to fill them up with bright colored africans that will defend their territories and even have alpha males. makes all the sims games look puss in comparison!
if you have a green thumb i would check out planted tanks. http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/2008.cgi
make sure you get plant compatible fish. most are tolerant to some degree a few cant be housed with them at all(mainly herbavores, like silver dollars).
