yeah .. got my new 225 gal, it needs three tops (middle will be hinged). I called a local glass company today to get a quick quote. he said the glass. done and cut etc will be about $30 CAD for 1/4" glass. he said my other option however would be to go with .. lexan? im not fermilliar with the product but he said it would be easier to add hinges. where you could just screw them in as opposed to using glue. also he said its alottt harder to break. im not fermilliar with this product but its an extra $14 to go with 1/4" lexan. or an extra $33 to go with 3/8" lexan .. whats the difference between glass and lexan and whats my best bet. i never got a quote on the 3/8" glass. probably should have.

keeping in mind im putting a silver aro in the tank (along with gar, bichirs, etc etc..) so i need something sturdy also. I'm assuming im going to need to weigh the tops down somehow or construct some way of keeping them down from the aro's jumps .. whats everyones opinion on what i should both buy and do to keep the aro in?

I have 2 x 1/4" Lexan lids on my 300 and it works for me, they do warp over time but i just flip mine over and it's all good again..lol I prefer lexan or acrylic over glass because i don't want to be picking glass out of my rays if one broke.

ya good point about the breaking. im on a budget is the only thing holding me back. .. its an extra 40 bucks ish in total to go lexan over glass but that 40 bucks makes a big difference when your on a tight budget .. and havent bought pump or heaters yet.

Lexan is a brand name acrylic. Lots of people tell me that acrylic lids will bow as they absorb water.

About 5 different people have told me its better to go with glass.

I would go with glass. It is cheaper and the chances of it breaking are small unless you are careless when handling it.

yah. i can be careful with it. thats no biggie. im just worried. when the aro gets stronger. will he be able to break the glass with a hard jump? if not ill probably save a few and go with glass

If you have an arowana, I would recommend building a canopy. I am building one that's fairly cheap. Just buy a board of 8'x2'x3/4" (around $10), I think you're able to make a canopy with that (maybe my measurement is a little off). Buy some hinges and it's a canopy! hehehe, easier said then done huh? Well, I'm gonna build one and will post some pictures in the near future. If the aros do jump, they're all inside the canopy (which I may protect with foam on the inside). I can put as much weight on it as I want, and not worry about breaking any glass, or any lexan warping. What do you think?

Check out craigslist too, i found one of my 1/4" piece that's 24"x60" for free on there.. Plus there's always free sheets of glass too, just have to make sure it's the tempered glass and won't just shatter.. Just an option.
