What is your take on "Aquarium UV Sterilizers"? Should they be used in your tank or not? I've heard many fish keepers are against UV sterilizers, then again, I've heard the opposite. I'm very interested in what you think?

There is nothing bad about it except perhaps the fact it is expensive in some areas which is why most people do not use it but if you can afford it, go for it. It is useful sometimes for green water issues, protozoans (ich), etc.

I choose not to use them. I take care of my water by changing it, and testing it.

I'm against testing it. One should be in strict control of their water via changes to such a degree testing shouldn't be nessecary.

That is awesome...I do not know how much nitrate is in my tank, unless I test it. Just hoping your water is good, is just waiting for disaster. To each their own.

once you know your stock and filtration its not that hard to know when your tanks need waterchanges without testing..

as for UVs.... all depends on what you are trying to do with them..

I'm for it, since they help kill parasites and algae. Next year I'm getting a 240W UV for my pond

Love my UV :) I run UV on almost all of my tanks its a bit expensive changing bulbs twice a year but IMO its well worth the clarity and peace of mind.

As Lupin described... the only "bad" thing about UV lights is they are an added expense...

If used properly, they can/will kill any parasites that get introduced to your tank. Keeping the water clean via water changes is great, but if a parasite slips in, water changes along will not remove it...

In my experience the only people who claim that UV lights are not effective... are the people who do not follow experienced suggestions on how to set them up.

I own several and use them proudly... and have for 5+ years........
