Hey Guys!

I found an old 20G aquarium that research used to use at my school. It has a hole in the side with a plastic bolt-like thing in the side for water to flow through (I assume).

So, how can I make this into a functional aquarium set-up? I assume it was used with some external canister filter that I probably can't afford lol.. but is there a way to plug the hole?

Thnx in advance!

Mike

I hope someone answers this... I posted the same type of thing a few days ago about a 250 with the holes in the bottom, but no overflows. I wanted to plug them, but got no responses! I figured somebody would have done it, especially here. So I'll be watching this thread as well!

welcome to mfk! you setup sounds like it will be fine.

Huh? He has a tank with a hole in it LOL it's not looking too good for him right now.

gluing a piece of glass sounds like an idea, what kind of glue though???

And is there any way I can use the hole to my advantage?

depending on the size you could always get a bulkhead and hex plug with some teflon tape (better fix for the closed loop drill holes in the bottom of a tank)

it sounds like you have a bulkhead, if so, you can buy pvc fittings at lowes you might need a small piece of pipe too

go with this guy hes right. dont patch it with glass when you have a functional bulk head.

theres a cap that screws into the bulkhead and plugs it up, if you op not to use it. i actually have a 40 gallon tank setup like that right now

if you buy the cap, use plumbing tape and wrap it before screwing it in, to make it water tight

yep that sounds like a bulkhead. you can find plugs/caps for it at home depot in the pvc plumbing section.

these holes make it much easier to create a wet/dry or sump setup, or to stick an external pump on. but for a 20G it might be easier to just stick on a hang-on back filter.
