i'm planning on putting my acrylic aquariums (90G & 60G) in uninsulated area (basically its the patio that has been walled up).

I live in OC, CA and i know it doesn't get THAT cold but i've always had my tanks inside and afraid of the temp flux from morning day to night.

so any tips/hints/advice would be appreciated. thanks.

depending on fish you are putting in the aquarium if it is not tropical you can get by but thinh about region the fish comes from and the temp in your state in summer and winter even though Cal does not have vary cold weather . think about how cold southern part of the U.S. got this year and the Midwest so I think you can insulate the tank with depending on your viewing pleasure withf oam sheets they come in White Blue and Green I got mine from home depoe. and put a heater in the tank and maybe a plastic insulated cover like for cars to cover it at night . or just insulate the Patio mine is insulated and I have air and heat running in and I live in ohio. Good Luck

Yeah I would say that with being in CA it shouldn't be too big of a deal. I live in the NE united states and in our house we barely use the heat (not my decision). Our fishtanks thrive pretty well with just the tank heaters, etc. I can keep my piranha tank at a solid 80 degrees all year round and our house gets COLD.

My fish are warmer than I am!

u might wanna invest in insulation just to be sure. im in san diego so the weather here is just about the same as in oc. although it doesnt get that cold, in the lowes it can go down to the 40's on like rainy nights so u might wanna be careful. also heater would work but in socal one day will be 40 then the next will be 75 so i think u also run the risk of overheating. they usually have a set temp to prevent that but my experiences have been that if ur heater is set at 80 or so, when the outside temp comes up, the water temp raises from past what the heater is set to.

my tanks are all in a barely insulated room (car port that was closed in)that we keep the door closed in. its works ok. works really good for my native collected fish that like cold water. native tanks are kept at 58 degrees because of it. all other tanks are heated to 78. it takes alittle more heat but it works ok.
that being said if u worried about it then pump in some insulation in the walls

thanks for all the suggestions.

So if I decide to insulate the tanks, I would place foam sheets on the sides and back of the tanks? and what type of foam sheets am I looking for, anything specific? thanks.

any styro thicker the better you could put a 4th piece on at night if its getting to cold
