so im committed to change my 36 bowfront to sand. seems like pool filter sand is the favorite around here and it sounds like a good choice. does it come in diff colors? i dont mean crazy color, i mean natural colors. and when using sand, the all black background looks good. i dont wanna use plastic backgrounds this time so what do you use? is it paint? what type is safe? can i paint w/ water/fish in tank? any other ideas w/ rocks and driftwood will be greatly appreciated. upload pics of your own tanks too if u have the time

I have pool filter sand in both my tanks, and yes the color does differ between the two. One is whiter than the other. I'm sure the location and how the sand is processed are factors in the differences. As for backgrounds, I do use the plastic, using petroleum jelly to adhere.

Depends on the brand of PFS you get. We used to get some super fine PFS from the HD and Lowe's but they just changed to a different brand on us and the granules are now a bit larger and pebbly looking. I actually like the new brand stuff's look though. Not sure about colors considering it's meant to go inside a pool filter and typically wouldn't be seen so I doubt they have bothered making different colored PFS. Not to say there aren't plenty of other types of sands out there you can get in different colors though.

For the back you can use spray paint, or roll on black paint. Doesn't make a difference which. I always use spray paint. Anything is safe to use considering it doesn't go inside the tank. If you do it with water in the tank just make sure to cover the tank real good so no fumes or after spray get in it.

Local landscaping business for cheap rocks for rock formations.

I just use play sand and it looks pretty good, there is mainly a white sand look with a few peppered granules from home depot for $4/50lbs but I found my piece of driftwood and planted my 46 bowfront

cmj15 i like the planted look. i have been thinking about that route too but not sure. anything special to keeping live plants?? diff light? ive never kept live before.

My 36g bowfront has a black background which I rolled, this maybe a better option since the tank is setup. I used play sand and while in was a huge pain to wash when adding it isn't any harder to maintain than the pfs in my 125. Sonce sand is so cheap I pay little attention to how much I suck up with the vacuum and have to add some 2 or 3 times a year. The last time my 125 needed sand it had about 100lbs of pfs and I niches in 30lbs of play sand since I had some laying around and that looks great. The 36g is planted and plants are thriving in the playsand.

thx bb, i think ur right, rolling the paint on mite be easiest w/ the tank set up already. by the way im gonna miss the captain spalding avatar, devils rejects is one of my favorites
