Can anyone give me an introduction on aquascaping? For example, where do you buy aquascaping materials like decor and such? The ones I find at Petco are too small and limited in variety? Also is there a general rule of thumb for placement of plants and objects to make the tank visually appealing?

It really depends on what you are looking for out if the tank. I usually like to have one side be more built up and the other have more open swimming area.
I’ll place plants wherever and let them go wild.
I’ve gotten decor from various places: petsmart, petco, the lfs, Amazon.

remember to use "the rule of thirds" when designing the aquarium, we enjoy seeing things in 3's and off-center, it helps things to look more natural and less formulaic. i find that making things flow together as much as possible helps me enjoy what i have made, and remember that you can always change it around if you don't like the looks of it.

I've found some good deals on scaping supplies here
Local fish stores, not the big box ones.
A lot more expensive especially for scape products but plants are reasonable
I've purchased from both, quality stuff.
