I currently have an aquarium with a screen lid because I read that African dwarf frogs need to come to the top to breath but it's starting to rust. Some places said you can use a glass top but I don't understand how they can breath this way. Am I mixed up on this?

Do you really think a glass top is going to cover every single inch? There will still be gaps.
Just realized I sounded rude, was not meant to come off like that.

Bichirs come to the top to breath and I use plexiglass tops. theres usually an inch or so between the water and the top. there's also usually something like a h.o.b or a heater that has to go through the top and that keeps the air fresh. I also use a plastic screen material used for latch hook designs to cover around the holes. you can get it at Walmart.

If there is a small gap for airing, glass will be perfect. I use it on my smaller tanks and so on.

Thank you for all of the information. I believe I'll go with the glass or plexi glass and will probably look for the screen as mentioned for any gaps. One of my other aquariums has a glass top but I used sponges to fill any gaps but I was confused on if the entire top of tank is sealed how do the frogs get the oxygen they need from the surface?

the top isn't sealed airtight. theres usually some piece of equipment that needs to be in the tank so theres going to be openings .
