I have the Aqueon® Power Filter QuietFlow 50 with the Aqueon Filter Cartridges. They do a decent job, I have had fish live with no issues in my tank for over a year. My only issue is the filter cartridges. They clean out the waste in my tank and turn brown. I try to clean them in a bucket of water from my tank. I swish it around and gently tap the bottom of the bucket with the cartridge. The water will turn brown from all the waste collected. I could do it for a few minutes, while changing the bucket water 2-3 times. It will still be full of waste and the cartridge remains brown. I have read that sponges are better, they will filter out the waste from the water and grow more beneficial bacteria.
My question is should I leave my filter the way it is or change it? I was thinking of replaceming the cartrigdges with filter sponges or something else but, I am unsure as to what to change it to.

i use scrubbies in my aqueon filters and they fit quite a few in there

Would you happen to have a link of them I can use? I am googling them and are for baths or kitchens. I know that these are most likely the correct things but don't want to potentially buy ones that can harm my fish.

Even bulk filter pad works, u can put a layer and have bio media, that way u can blast the filter pad with hot water and clean it way easier a few times before discarding, I have a 20 on my 10 gal and use a bag of ac bio max and I let it hang off the end where blue thing goes, works awesome and u only have to swish bio around 1x per month, and the filter pad is cut to fit and like 8 for a big sheet so u could have 10-15 replacements. Just put it width ways so it goes to the top and it will catch everything, u can even cut the filter and carbon out of the old filter so u can use the frame. Is buy a bag soon so it seeds quicker and keep the dirty filter pad by the bio.

55 gallon african cichlid tank.
4 - yellow labs
1 - p. acei
2 - red zebras
(in a few months I will slowly be adding 7 p. aeci that are growing in a 20 gallon tank)

Reasons to switch:
Can find media that are easier to clean, leading to less ammonia in the tank.
Cheaper replacements.
More surface space for beneficial bacteria. The cartridges for the filter are small and do not have large surface area.

Reasons not to switch:
It fits perfectly and I know no problems will arise.
It has done a good job keeping my fish alive and happy.

That is why all I buy are the Aquaclear HOB filters. The sponge is easily rinse and good for a couple of years.

I have the filter because I was a noob when I bought my tank. I thought it was a good deal at the time to buy the Aqueon 55 gallon set. I think I will be going tomorrow to buy the AquaClear sponge 70.

What size tank is it. If it is 55 gallons I would the bigger Aquaclear 110 believe me you will not regret it.

I like the ac line ...but ...you can cut sponges or use cut to fit pads on any hob thus turning a $39 penguin into a slighty lower flowing version of an$ 80 hob (ac110)

while I like acs very much ,I can get more bang for the buck buying a used filter and pads or sponges to cut to fit
