I have an Aqueon 75 gallon tank with 48x18 Aqueon glass tops (the other brands did not fit the top with Aqueon's huge center brace). I recently purchased a Marineland emperor pro 450 and it barely fits the brace, but the real issue is the glass canopies are too long to for the filter, hanging off the front 1/4 inch or resting on top of the filter. I really like the filter, the tank, and the canopies but feel like it looks ridiculous. It will be in a high school classroom and if the glass has to rest this way it will inevitably be broken making it ridiculous and a hazard.

Am I able to trim the black trim to move the filter back? Is there a way to modify the filter or canopy? Is there anything I can do other than use a different filter?

tl;dr Marineland emporer pro 450 extends too far into tank and gets in the way of the glass canopy, what modifications can I make?

Does that filter have an adjuster on it to move the filter forward or backward toward the tank? Or is it just too narrow to fit over the brace on your tank? You could trim the tank brace lip if needed but it would be a shame especially if the Aqueon tank is newer.

Usually the Aqueon glass canopies comes with a removable back strip that can be cut to fit most power filters but if you have already removed it and the filter sets to far forward I think your only reasonable choice is to choose another brand filter.

You could goto a local glass store and get a solid piece of glass in the dimensions you need for the filter side. Even see if they can drill it for placement of a couple plastic/acrylic knobs to pick it up with during cleaning time etc, or stick on ones if you don't want to drill.
