Aqueon Water Changer and Substrate

What substrates can you use with the Aqueon Water Changer? I am new to this hobby and picked one of these up. I would like to use a sand, but wouldn't that suck it up?

Most any vac will pull sand.
You just need to practice getting your distance off of the sand bed right.
A swishing motion will also take some practice, but will pay off when hidden detritus moves out of plants and decor, to be sucked up and removed.
