Sorry if this has been discussed before but I need an answer kinda quickly. I am setting up a 4 foot tank which is about 75 gallons and wondering whether I can mix aragonite with gravel to stabolize the pH?
aragonite raises PH just to let you know, it's found in saltwater live sand, and African cichlid sand. you want soft water, and low ph. 7.0 or lower for angelfish.
Yeah I realise it raises pH, dont have a lot in there and I read that angels like pH between 6 and 7.5. I will keep an eye on it and see what happens. I reckon in the whole tank there would only be about 1/8 aragonite to gravel
The reason it raises PH is because it consists of crushed stony coral skeletons, (calcium). It dissolves in water, raising PH. Important to keep in mind when doing water changes, or you could possibly end up with PH shifts, not good for fish.
it also increases hardness. Angels typically enjoy soft/acidic (pH < 7) conditions, aragonite is for marine/rift lake setups where the water needs to be hard/alkaline. pH isn't that critical anyway. Just keep it stable, you'll be alright.
